an interesting aspect of human behavior: we find similar but divergent more egregious than extremely divergent on contentious items. (the vegan hates the vegetarian syndrome)

I think this is an identity issue at the heart. Freud had a term for it, though I forgot what it was. I've seen it described as horizontal hostility.

Yeah I like the sound of that. Something like factions that are too close mutually dilute each other's identity.
