short answer is that we don't know, but and crew are looking forward to finding out! This pre-print is an early step in predicting their present and past range, based on the few observations that we have access to. Go team togoi!

so given that they beat invasive species like Aedes aegypti quite handily in their ability to handle harsh climates, why don't we find Aedes togoi anywhere except for a strip of the Pacific coast, both in Asia and in the Pacific Northwest?

and are quite happy in temperatures ranging from our Aedes aegypti insectary (~27°C) to pretty darn cold (-8° air temperature)

oh, and also, they have to survive potential predation from starfish (does anyone know if starfish feed on insect larvae? serious question!)...

Breeding in pools filled with saltwater spray and rain, their larvae can survive just fine in water ranging from totally deionized to 300% (!) the salinity of seawater.

Hi friends, I've started a lab at Harvard and I'm looking to hire a post-doc! We identify genetic associations in natural populations, test them by making mutants in the lab, and study the development that brings genotype and phenotype together = ). Ad:

One of the most interesting Aedes togoi breeding habitats I’ve ever seen was this shell-filled rock pool I found back in August. Very shallow and with a floor of broken seashells, it contained thousands of Ae. togoi larvae that would wriggle into the shells to evade capture!
