So I think the only way they'll get out of this hole is to really change up some of their non instance based core gameplay loops.

I think there are bigger issues here. Zones are so micro managed they offer nothing in terms of exploration and discovery as well.

Eg it is daytime therefore X is more powerful, leading to Y happening to a base, etc etc etc.
