Open spaces gave a sense of vastness when even the slow mount was accessible at level 40 - even then, it was painful sometimes (e.g. Arathi)

But their implementation is probably contingent on the use of said space. Karabor / Bladespire ended up being abandoned in WoD for that.

Too much open space reminds me of Hellfire Peninsula or Tanaris. Which, IMO are really boring zones from a topographic standpoint
