Ep2 of #StarTrekDiscovery One plot in the ship, one plot with the away team. They're so close to getting the core structure down. Ironically the main issue with this ep is that there's so much focus on so many crew member stories, none really get time to breathe properly.

The broad decision to split everyone off into pairs kinda works overall, but each individual story feels rushed. Having the first episode cover core setting ideas frees up some narrative time here, but effectively we're meeting most characters for the first time. (because we are)

It's the thematic thrust of the season, but the space western allusions are not in any way subtle in #StarTrekDiscovery S3 American frontier stories including a grimy saloon and some black booted bandits. But starfleet idealism wins out in the A plot, which is something positive?

Having started watching TOS since season 2 ended, Tilly as the excitable/naive/single focus ensign comes off a lot more reasonably now I've seen Chekhov smooch half the universe. Doug Jones and Michelle Yeoh are also still standouts, the latter in particular just hamming it up.

Overall, again, this could be good! The ending is wildly frustrating though. Now we have the "mystery" of Burnham in the missing year. The plot refocuses on her narrative as opposed to the crew or the universe we just spent an episode working on getting to know.

Final thing on #StarTrekDiscovery S3E2 - Camera direction. The wide work and outdoor closeups are excellent and Iceland is lovely. But why so many shuddering camera sweeps in the ship? Cuts rather than pans would have been less off-putting when switching shots on the crew.

I'm highly suspicious... but might be willing to give it a go. Doug Jones! Iceland! My suspicion that I still won't be able to overcome the combo of not liking Burnham & feeling like her screen time is at the expense of having a great ensemble.

Those suspicions may be validated so far. The setting is a great one, the second episode suggests we might get more crew time overall. Burnham SEEMS to be getting a rejig, but the idolisation is still there. Just not sure there's enough space in 13 EPs for crew & Burnham & plot.
