I think a game that gives you a minor reward after failure instead of taking something away works only a few times. In the end the delta between min and max reward is felt, it's always about how much more you could have got. At least that was the player feedback in the early 2000

Design of difficulty in games: BAD: Increasing hit points and damage of a boss. Makes the fight more annoying, but not challenging. GOOD: Adding new mechanics. You need to have new challenges to overcome.
