Funny thing is, I find games like Witcher and ME to have much better writing because of the personal relationships with other NPC's or at least more meaningful due to emotional moments that are lacking in a detached character.

Uh, that's not really what's going on here? You can have that in a game that has a player character filling a defined role. (Vs a game having a player fill a defined character). Now I'll admit, it's probably harder - I doubt many people had Skyrim bring em to tears!
