There’s a Rommel like thing going on with Saurfang. So, Rommel was held up as being a more simplistic, honourable guy after the WW2, with much of that being pushed by the allies in order to ease the German people back into the fold & give a character to rally around.

But he also knew that his dying for the sake of hope would immediately make this decision one of martyrdom. He knew what this would mean to the world after. He accepted everything. He doesn't get to run.
