Further thoughts: I think this just comes down to Blizzard not writing a game. The Battle for Azeroth primarily exists in transmedia narrative, with the game at best paying lipservice. The quality of the CGs, music, direction, acting etc is covering for reeeal basic writing.

Moving away from the writing, they also delivered around 30m of playable content, just about none of which matters in pushing the story forward. Argent Vanguard did a better job of showing a war, and that was in 2008. So content wise, quite a letdown as well.

Similar thing struck me when playing Classic. Blizzard were never sophisticated storytellers but they were VERY good in telling stories via worldbuilding. This is one of the biggest shifts between back then and now and it’s a change for the worse.
-
I found the world building in all expansions to be amazing, including bfa. The only difference is the expansions all had a basic overarching narrative to follow. Classic doesn’t have one.

What do you think about Destiny worldbuilding? Does it click?

This is why I cancelled my sub. What usually draws me back to WoW isn't the clunky game mechanics, it's the world, I love Azeroth and it's characters. I was so excited for a narrative led expansion, but in the end, it just didn't translate into the game.

I remember when they said they wouldn't make her into Garrosh 2.0, but then she gotten all racist, tried to assassinate a Horde character, became a rival to the Human King, got too hands-on with Old Gods stuff, and then we had a coup.
-
Only difference is that we didn't beat her up. That was disappointing.

WoW is theme park. World doesn't matter to them.
-
So true. With its descent further and further into theme park territory, the world doesn't matter anymore. In the Classic documentary, they said "the most important character in World of Warcraft was the World". They've forgotten that mantra a looooong time ago.

The war campaign isn’t the only thing they’ve done this expansion. The world building in KT and Zandalar, for Jaina, for Talanji, the Drust, build up of the Shadowlands, Wrathion, Calia. It’s all world building done within game.
