They constantly fail to deliver on anything they promise narratively in game. They're going with 'cheap' self indulgent storytelling that has the subtlety of a thrown brick INSTEAD of having their world, ie the game, do the work. The worldbuilding of old doesn't get clicks.

Moving away from the writing, they also delivered around 30m of playable content, just about none of which matters in pushing the story forward. Argent Vanguard did a better job of showing a war, and that was in 2008. So content wise, quite a letdown as well.

There is a real lack of worldbuilding that goes on in current retail wow. Replaying classic has really shown me how the world was built up from level 1. That has all since faded.

I’d say boralus, zandalar and nazjatar are excellent examples of world building

I started playing FF14 and it’s crazy how different the story/writing is. It very good in that game. And I love both games still. I still love wow characters in wow and feel my characters are important too.

Yea, storytelling in FFXIV is really uncompared to any other mmo. It's just single player quality imo. But, I too still love bot WoW and FFXIV. They have very different advantages over another and I'm happy playing both. :)

Can agree with the first point and there's a conversation to be had about that. But real basic writing? That can be just you not liking it cause of the 1st point you've made. I'm not gonna say the story in bfa is breaking new grounds. But will put it at an above average for now.

Slightly above average.

Presumably an RTS game's campaign mode was better suited medium for "traditional" character or plot driven storytelling anyway (books being even better, I'ld argue...)—that's from where we have the best Blizzard writing to date anyway... (1/3)

(e.g. everyone's favourite, the fall of Arthas (and again, arguably excluding the books atm)). In an MMO, Blizzard would be wise to double-down on the kind of storytelling that has been it's saving grace (imho!) lately anyway - massive worldbuilding (incl the cosmic stuff).(2/3)
