This would still work in Valves favor because it's users could sell games through the steam marketplace and valve could still take a cut of the resale kinda like how blizzard takes a cut of all token sales.

Yep. Same for G2A, who would do well off this. It'd pretty much destroy indie viability, as that would instead rely on responsible consumers who wish to reward creators, not middlemen.

I feel like UFC Que Choisir went into this thinking it would benefit customers, possibly intentionally ignoring the effect that this kind of ruling would have on digital-only market. We've seen the effects of second-hand digital games reselling with G2A. It's absolute nonsense

The used games market only functions because it accounts for a small part of the gaming market. Why would you buy a game for 50€ if you can buy the exact same digital product for 30€? Then, who buys the game at full price so they can fill the second-hand marketplace?

This is very interesting

Looking only from my own perspective. I have so many games that I never played and would love to give to other players who would play it. I’m curious if there’s a way to not harm indie games in the process

I wonder if this will ever be implemented? I just assumed this would never happen and now it's been raised I'm not sure how I feel about it. I guess as more of a consumer this is good but I don't want to see devs who are already struggling take a hit.
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Im curious how this would work legally considering we don't "own" our steam games, but instead a license to access said game.

[..]a 2012 European Court ruling (which said that a transaction for digital goods still implies the transfer of the right of ownership)[..] Valve's terms attempted to frame a sale as a 'subscription' to a product, but the court ruled that users were [..] purchasing licenses, [..]

I think a model could be found in which the devs/publishers can also make a profit. Steam already takes a percentage of marketplace transaction. I think some of the money can be funneled towards the developers/publishers.
-
It is a questionable assumption that people who buy cheaper "used" would have paid full price in the first place and with the money (or more likely store credit) gained from selling, it surely will be reinvested in purchasing other games.
