I suppose I'd ask where the line is? Clearly some form of post subscription monetisation is going to happen. If we're to accept that assumption, what do you think it should be? Genuine question, I'd love to hear what you think.

There is no need of any post subscription monetisation. WoW is still highly profitable even without the shop.

Obviously the subscription alone should balance the development costs and still leave them with a healthy profit. But that's not how corporations "think" - they don't care whether something is profitable, but whether it is as profitable as it can possibly be.

I honestly think the line is where people “feel” they connect with a company or franchise. Meaning if you like wow your going to feel your supporting them, if you don’t like FFXIV it’s egregious. In the end, outside the sub, there is no one forcing you to spend money.

With wow and FF14 I don't do it because I feel like supporting the company, I like what I like and I earn enough that I'll pay extra when I feel like it for nice stuff. I don't think either company have a lack of content anything in these stores is definitely added extra.

If it is limited to cool cosmetics but they are also earn able directly through in game progression id say that's good. No 3rd party stuff like the gold, to swap to balance, to swap back into a store purchase, though that system is nice, it can feel tedious at times.

That being said things I wouldn't mind if they could, sell via direct purchase for real life goods, of, lets say the music composed for Warcraft (which I would love in a CD variant) to come with bonus digital things. They did it in the past to a lesser extent the TCG cards.

For me I'm okay with the mounts, tmog, pets etc. Any convinience I wouldn't be okay with, also for some reason I'm not a fan of titles, those feel more valuable as ingame achivements than the rest. (The only shop item I own is the transmorph toy since the profits helped esports)

If this is the future I wish they would go the ESO route, where continuous subscription earns mtx cash at least. Paying for extra stuff with no way to earn currency in game is irritating.

I'd rather the item shop exist than the sub prices go up. Whales exist and it is foolish to not create things for them. No ones mad they sell plushies of WoW characters, in game cosmetics are really no different.

I think the problem is selling mounts with new skins that aren’t obtainable by players within the game. Although I buy mounts that I love, I do enjoy chasing them in game.
