Any electrical engineers out there? My current thoughts on it: - Power transmission to homes would be less efficient than to datacenters - Datacenter design can allow for better efficiency & build in energy generation - Datacenters = higher utilisation, less wasted resources.https://twitter.com/Hoigwai/status/1153582035971129344 …

Maybe, maybe not. Would require some study to see if all things being equal the server farm works out to better efficiency and is cleaner.

From the article, I think the issue they were raising was that, now, there's no regulation or requirement for datacenters to have min efficiency standards. So right now the issue is that there's inefficient datacenters on top of the existing power usage. Hence, "can't continue".

I wonder how much of this will be solved in time. Like, if 80% of cars are EVs in 20 years, then the EV cells (once down to around 60% capacity) can be reused for another 10 years for energy storage. I imagine stuff like that would impact the viability of greening up a lot.

This was basically my main criticism of the article. It's broadly on the right track but it's not quite reaching a conclusion on most of the points. So for example, here, there's a need for a change to a sustainable system that prioritises Green Dev over immediate profit.

Yeah. Even economically, a good PUE is good business. It's odd that they're being alarmist about the impact of game streaming on energy consumption, like with Stadia, but also mention that Google is very efficient. Over on MS's side, their new datacenters are 1.1.

So it seems like he's identified a problem, arm waved a bit without specifics on what could be bad, but hasn't mentioned what the industry is doing in that regard? Surely a stronger point would be that even with a utility PUE, grid efficiency & power gen is the problem

The article conclusion seems more about getting audiences to think about all of the future sustainability/labour/costs in tandem. So there is a section about how the big companies are working on these green issues, but that its not seen as a consumer issue to talk about.

I suppose the problem is that it isn't educating consumers in a balanced way. It seems like it'll leave people a little more angry, and with a very one sided viewpoint. ...perhaps the dangers of people writing outside their area of competence?

Reading through it with a vague understanding of energy infrastructure, it's just a bad article. I get its harder to get the point across while educating people, but it's the right thing to do, especially when it's an important topic like this one.

I suspect it's a format and audience issue as well. This is the kind of piece that could expand to three or four more expansive articles, one for each section but this article would run the risk of ending up dry and bogging casual readers down if it gets too technical.

Yeah. I guess the commissions feel a little immoral. Their goal is to be perceived as an authoritative source, so seeing them wear that skin while providing content that's purposefully one sided just seems wrong.

I took it that the goal was to get people talking on all of the worst case issues. I agree that the section on power is pessimistic, as are the other sections, but a feature raising issues for wider discussion is supposed to be the start of a broader convo (like this), not end.
