Any electrical engineers out there? My current thoughts on it: - Power transmission to homes would be less efficient than to datacenters - Datacenter design can allow for better efficiency & build in energy generation - Datacenters = higher utilisation, less wasted resources.https://twitter.com/Hoigwai/status/1153582035971129344 …

Maybe someone else than Google would do what you propose, but Google is just counting on wast amounts of redundancy.

In an ideal world, sure. But in this world lowest bid and cheapest is the corporate mantra. You would think that they would want that efficiency and to run clean but history tells a very different story.

Nothing exists in void. Even if data center can work more efficiently from electronics side.. what about "cooling". With PC in house you don't really care if room gets 3-5 degree warmer. In datacenter cooling might be major power consuption. You gain one place but loose other.

Thats just example of thought .. I'm not specialist.

My basic assumption is reversed. A data center + Strada/Console means two machines draw on the grid, where otherwise (at least in non-server dependent games) only one machine, the console, draws on the grid.

Additionally, the growing concern about digital ownership being a liability to collectors, where physical media is regaining some value... streaming consoles become basically a membership to an arcade.

I work in HPC and big datacenters are far more efficient than small clusters/personal computers for the same amount of computing cores. Mainly because the cooling solutions are made to spec and more energy efficient for a large amount of computers, than cooling them individually

Your forgetting solar power at the end user also it might be negligent cause we are failing to account for the carbon footprint of the materials involved in constructing the hardware for both end user vs the data centre
