Ya - this is the biggest issue with sharding in MMOs. When players are constantly fading into an out of existence, they may as will not even be there. They feel more like set pieces than actual players. playing classic again made me realize what a difference it makes

I think that there are many possible ways of putting the world back in WoW that do not involve having a strict server affiliation. Wintergraps was a cool concept that worked in a time where the playerbase was massive. But I'm not sure it's the be-all end-all of player engagement,

But I get your point, and agree that some ideas had to be sacrificed in favour of keeping the MASSIVE in Massive Multiplayer Online. ;)

If sharding dissapeared, if each realm was an unique world again, you wouldn't still have things like wintergrasp because of realm imbalance. These are the top 15 realms in pop for NA and EU. There are a few balanced, but the big mayority are one sidedpic.twitter.com/leLNboVIeI
