Look I’m all for calling these bastards out, but man the amount of irresponsible reporting, often from people who are qualified journalists. Insane.

You think 'youtube gaming journalists' who can't light and compose a scene correctly, edit or post-process effectively are interested in due dilligence?
-
Why do you think it's only youtubers? I've seen even IGN reporting his salary as being 20m+

I think the biggest problem regarding financial topics is that there's alot of 'unknown'. There's so many angles to it, which might make it difficult for just anyone to cover it. Unless you're experienced in the area/industry might not see the whole picture.

Yup! US corps have perfected the ability to hide “proper” wages & compensation. Some companies tie in the money given for college courses to one’s yearly wages, thus inflating the number. But, there’s also those that minimize the amount that’s actually made for various reasons.

People in politics don’t know what tax brackets mean so I mean this is going to be a hard ask. (Also sometimes ignorance is willful to make an argument)

It's just a general lack of understanding by most people, journalists included, of how finances work for high net worth people. When someone hears "So and So executive earned $10 mil this year," it doesn't matter to them where that money comes from.
-
It doesn't matter if $9.9 mil of that is stock options vesting in 5 years based on performance targets. Most people don't understand what that even means, so they just refer to the $10 mil number and assume it means the company literally paid that in cash day 1
