Humans are tribalistic, so it's normal to view a company as family, which leads to reactions like, "How dare you report on these layoffs before management told us?" I sympathize. But the only people who have workers' best interests in mind are workers. Your company is not family.

A Blizzard employee told me recently that despite the video game industry's volatility, it always felt like layoffs would never happen there. If a company needs to please its shareholders, layoffs can and will happen anywhere. The only way to fight back is to organize.

Also, it's hard not to be upset when you hear about layoffs or other major news about your own company through outside press. I've been there -- dozens of times. And every time it's happened, I blamed my company for not keeping me informed, not the press for doing their jobs.

One more thing: Anyone accusing us of reporting on these things for "clicks" isn't just being cruel and crass, they also have no understanding of the media landscape. If I was after clicks, I'd be posting Anthem guides, not reporting on labor.

Ultimately, most of the big stories, and the most interesting investigative pieces, do tend to be broke by one org, So GG. ...counting the days until the story of how Anthem was rebooted mid development...
