The recent YouTube crackdown seems kind of reasonable. A few family channels being hit in the near term is likely good for the long term health of the platform.

We just need an age restriction or something... like... 15+ or something

While I agree with you about these channels being a little off; this whole situation feels like yet another instance of YouTube refusing to take responsibility for their platform and then punishing their users for it once they get caught.
-
They could've done something about the pedo ring in their comments ages ago but that would've meant using actual people and taking responsibility instead of relying on algorithms to do it for them.

Put in an age restriction or at least ban comments on videos for younger people. Something.

It is no different to any child on any platform TV, Music, Sport or whatever they do, the perverts will always find a way to get their sick pleasure. What you are advocating is punishing the many children because of the few perverts, classic subversion by YT.

The problem is that now if you really hate a channel you can potentially weaponize comments to get videos demonitized

While I get your reasoning, the main issue is that not only are some channels who have done nothing wrong, with even YT saying to one person that they've done nothing wrong and have done a good job moderating the comments, getting punished, but also (1/2)
-
that the language YT used by saying "even if your videos are advertiser friendly, you'll still get punished if the comments are inappropriate," could get easily abused by people who don't like other people's work.
