Activision Blizzard says that -- despite its "record year" -- it's laying off 8% of staff. Last year it had roughly 9,600 employees, which means that 800 people are losing their jobs. Updating here as we learn more: https://kotaku.com/activision-blizzard-begins-massive-layoffs-1832571288 …

They should be hiring devs though, but that doesn't change the layoffs

You staff for the future, not the past. Firing people is expensive (severance packages etc) so I see this is more admitting a cap on future growth

They announced a massive revenue drop prevision for 2019, a "year of transition" (while they've been growing since 2014) so they probably want to make up for it? https://twitter.com/askagamedev/status/1095442787108036609 …

They once cut 600 at once according to wikipedia, don't know about the # of employees (back then). And then they once layed of a ton of GMs. Or was that the same date?

To note here - Operating revenue is down 13%. In a market obsessed with growth, this is really bad. Activision-Blizzard announced roughly 8% in work force reduction, or around 800 people. They plan on making most of the cuts in support staff, not development https://twitter.com/ZhugeEX/status/1095440576797962240 …

They are increasing development team size by 20% to increase output. May end up being a good thing for the Blizzard gamer if quality doesn't suffer. Seems most / all of these layoffs are support like CSRs, CM etc. Still horrible for them though. :(
