I wonder if the real upcoming story is of Overwatch. In a world where it's less about direct competition and more about competition over the users time, it seems like their complete mishandling of Overwatch will lead to other titles winning out.

They just discounted it by 50%, and we know that Blizzard MAUs were stagnant as of the last earnings call. Given the extreme competition of Q4 calendar 2018, it's hard to see Overwatch performing well.

Takeaway: the strange twitter/tumblr megafan club don't play Overwatch. E-sports isn't something that most people don't care about. OW is terrible to watch. Been at the Blizz arena live, can confirm lol. The game needs core content. Maps. Modes. Events. Stuff you PLAY.

When I was there I never felt like esports was getting a priority. Just the way feature request and timelines worked.

That's interesting... Outwardly I think they gave that impression given the focus that OWL got. Plus... well, the development pace of Overwatch. It seems inexplicably slow.

I stopped playing Overwatch because I would leave for months at a time and the game barely changed. This along with things like ledge dashing being removed meant I lost interest quicker. SSB Melee remains exciting to watch because of those hard to do unintended features.
