Found this a day after implementing it too! http://www.dice.se/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Chapter5-Andersson-Terrain_Rendering_in_Frostbite.pdf … I had ended up doing a nooby version of how DICE did it with Frostbite. This paper pretty much lays out how it works - would make for an interesting read.

The only thing that I didn't get around to doing (besides more blending!) was making the textures procedural. So they are placed based on the rules in tweet 1, but I had originally wanted to create the textures algorithm - ideally in just shader code. Ran out of time though.
