Sweet! So that's WoW as a social hub. Really a time where WoW is acting as a 'platform' more than a game. I do think that it somewhat lowers out standards outside of the highly directed raid/dungeon gameplay.
So opportunity cost is too high in terms of time, and I have too much going on to be a good part of a team because I can't ensure regular availability for events etc.

Neither do we. But I'll be playing the game normally and ill run past a rally or event happening and I can watch or join in or not bother. Sounds exactly what you're after.
