Pretty decent login theme, feels a little weak though. Can't really put my finger on it? Feels less... melodic? Few of the theme transitions are a bit odd, like when the Zandalar theme enters.

The classic Call To Arms theme is much more subtle (and Freehold-y) than usual, to the extent that just where you are expecting it to kick in properly it goes into Anduin's theme and then quickly into Sylvanas. It's a statement, and I like it

Alright so I think the core of it is basically the same as my general gripes with how WoW's music has evolved over time. It's also something I think we see a lot in the industry. So, time goes on, budgets get larger, people can afford tremendous orchestras.

So the melody is the beating heart of a track. More instruments & more complexity certainly does give us a 'bigger' sound, but I think it is typically less focused towards the most important part of the track. I think this has hit Blizzard more than most as of late.

I actually think it makes the music more easy to actively listen to, say on your phone. But far less effective at doing it's job - which is being video game music that's listened to in a very different context than traditional music.

The larger sound & more complex orchestral compositions also have a homogenising effect, both when comparing tracks within a WoW expansion, and when compared to the rest of the industry.

Can I point that as someone who went to uni to study this, in particular driven by my love for Warcrafts composition - that you can immediately spot the lack of Brower in this piece. There's a lack of restraint, and a rushed effort to get the best Leitmotifs worked in than before

Compare this piece to the Mists one and the contrast is stark, for example

Fuck I love the Mists music, some of their best work ever. I wouldn’t listen to it, but TBC has some of my favorite tracks - particularly Netherstorm, Terokkar, HF & Nagrand. Use of guitar (i think??) in Netherstorm is YUM.

The main theme has always consistent of "Expansion-flavor faction themes, primary character themes, major leitmotif themes" - Warlords was another good example of this. These leitmotifs exist everywhere, especially in zones - in BFA theres so many that in this piece its messy
