China was so much poorer and more closed to the world then I doubt they would have been able to spread as effectively. So many fewer travelers both domestic and international
were we just really, really lucky that no new viruses emerged from China in the 1950s or 1960s, when there was a *ton* of new human activity and fresh contact with animals?

The irony is, one of the principle reasons the HK flu spread to the West so quickly, was the colonial networks. HK’s Anglican Bishop Ronald Hall apparently made an off hand joke that the flu was God’s punishment for Imperialism.
