It's a strange answer either way, because the role of Death is one that ushers souls to the after-life of either God or Lucifer, so it's a heavy duty of serious responsibility; not something to be taken lightly.

So it seems strange to confer a serious and dutiful role to someone who essentially became the first ultimate betrayer, Cain. And yet seems an unfair punishment to be dealt on God's favored brother, Abel.

My favorite interpretations of the Afterlife always portray it as this complex bureaucracy with established rules, roles, & regulations where those who have already passed on continue to contribute to ushering the souls who have passed until they've "done their bit" and can pass.

But even with this in mind, there has to be "The First Clerk". Which kind of throws away the idea of Death as this eternal being and what happened was that Abel the first one guiding folks along until he hit his quota, and finally got his place up by the big guy's side.

I mean take a look at the type of person Abel was; definitive flower-child. Loved the animals, cared for his chores, loved his family, loved his god. The model citizen, albeit of a civilization of 4. Model civil servant. Perfect fit for the role.

Death is just doing their job. Being afraid of Death as the spiritual entity doesn't make any sense because Death isn't the one that kills you. If in some sci-fi/horror fare you could see Death, they'd just be chilling in the corner watching the clock.

If you ever paid attention to the lyrics in One by Metallica, it's a fucked up story. Boy goes to war, steps on mine, loses arms/legs/face/all senses. Trapped in his own head. Wishes for death, no one will let him die because he's a popular case study.
