I've always had this weird preoccupation with the entity of Death and their identity, especially the idea that Death is a human who's been confined to this role. Which begs the question of when death first became a thing for humanity, who would be death?

Death is just doing their job. Being afraid of Death as the spiritual entity doesn't make any sense because Death isn't the one that kills you. If in some sci-fi/horror fare you could see Death, they'd just be chilling in the corner watching the clock.
