Different backgrounds = different perspective We see through a cultural lens, which develops in our cultural context. Remove the background, and the squares are the same. is about "us", not "them." It's knowing our own cultural framework.

Emoji are tech-based gestures supporting digital communication. And for the record, WeChat is still ahead of Unicode in the emoji game, reflecting the more nuanced expression in high context cultures. 3/3

Emoji, like gestures, aren't a cultural leveler. The meaning changes with context. Go back to their roots in emoticons: in the West, emotion shown through the mouth :), in the East, the eyes ^_^. Americans use emoji more as punctuation and sentence closure. So what are they? 2/3

Lots of culture in the new emoji: Bubble tea, Mexican piñata and tamale, Swiss fondue, Russian nesting doll. And Twitter just launched quick emoji reactions for DMs. Are emoji becoming our ? Not so fast... 1/3

Well thanks speakers for making it easy for me tomorrow: a debate on privacy rights as human rights, and now says we need "shared lexicon" between regulators/ developers on practices like encryption. More on that in my talk on "Data as a Social Science." ✅

Taking passengers' body temperatures to control . There would be a revolt in the West. Only similar experiences I've had are infrared temperature scan on arrival in Cuba and an antibacterial spray down before landing in Chile (to protect the crops).
