I watch less and less @YouTube now, because I can't find the content I want. Whenever I log on, I want to watch my favorite subs, and see what the latest videos they have are, but YouTube keeps showing me "recommendations" I don't care for, and I don't know where my subs are.

Just to confirm, have you tried marking these videos as *Not interested* by clicking on the 3 - dot menu? This will influence how YouTube suggests videos to you in the future. Here's more about managing your recommendations: https://goo.gl/mfD7rf . Hope this helps.

I did not know about that. It's not really something I look for. It's not very intuitive. Also, It's an extra click action I'd have to take every time when I just want to sit down and watch something. I'm usually multitasking and I don't want to spend 5 minutes curating my feed.

I miss the old YouTube where my subs, the content I explicitly selected as interested in, were front and center and recommendations were secondary.
