While you’re watching… If the Football field were a timeline of the 14-billion year old Universe, with the Big Bang at one end, then at the other end, the width of a single blade of grass spans 30,000 years of human history, from Cro-Magnon to the present.

Loons can’t walk! They only come on land during two times in their lives: to breed and to die. The rest of the time, they’re in the water or (more rarely) the air.

A full build of Autopilot neural networks involves 48 networks that take 70,000 GPU hours to train. Together, they output 1,000 distinct tensors (predictions) at each timestep. This is what a Tesla autopilot sees [source: ]

There is a neutron star that rotates 716 times per second. How fast is that? In this illustration, it rotates 9 times while a hummingbird executes half a flap of its wings. (h/t ) (Hummingbird footage from the Slow Mo Guys: )

My, oh my, it's a veiled lady. This beautiful Phallus Indusiatus is characterized by its bell-shaped cap and delicate lacy "skirt". The specific epithet stems from the Latin adjective indūsǐātus, "wearing an undergarment". 🍄 🥼

TO SCALE: 8 planets + 2 dwarf planets! Objects to relative scale in size and rotation speed. Tilts for each planet are found by the right-hand rule – close your hand, keep thumb out: rotation direction is given by fingers, while thumb points north. 10 hours passing each second!

Happy Halloween Eve! It’s time for another year of my all-time favourite festivity, Tokyo’s mundane Halloween costume party, where folks dress up as an utterly normal and boring thing Here are my favourite costumes from the 2019 event this past weekend

Today is Dr. Mae Jemison's birthday, she became the first African American woman in space on Sept. 12, 1992. From a General practitioner, to a medical officer with the Peace Corps in West Africa, to an Engineer, to an astronaut, the woman is a powerhouse.

The reason why the shape of a lot of pianos looks like an exponential is because for waves on a string, doubling length means reducing a music pitch by an octave (2x the frequency).
