Another caution from this as I've been further mulling is to be wary when cases say they've had no contact with sick individuals. They just might not know the other individual was ill if they weren't actively coughing/sneezing/etc.

Fellow Program Committee member told me today that she loves to write. I'm glad she does - check out her latest blog as we plan . Or maybe I'm just a sucker for anything with a Dylan Thomas Reference 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿...

And of course the correction or retraction, if need be, will appear as quickly as the retraction did, right? Because...peer review.

And lo, as if to back up your point that peer review doesn’t cure all ills, here’s an example of a peer-reviewed paper on the coronavirus in NEJM that was wrong because it was too rushed.

During crises, there's often a premium placed on moving fast – for understandable reasons; yet, consequences exist. I was wary about this letter when it came out and called for cautious interpretation (below). Appearances can be incorrect. Let's continue to be judicious. 2/2

Look like the German cluster of may not have been evidence for non-symptomatic transmission after all []. The authors didn't even chat with the index case to verify her *alleged* absence of symptoms... So how did they draw their conclusions? 1/2

NOTE: This is by no means to say that all scientists who pass this test are reliable sources of information (or that everyone who doesn't pass isn't one). Rather, it's a back-of-the-envelope way to make an assessment fast – especially when you're about to hit the retweet button.

To avoid spreading misinformation about , a quick way to verify if someone is a relevant expert is by searching for their name on Google Scholar and checking for publications & thesis topics in infectious disease []. For example (using myself):

Final conclusion: While this is a new foe, we have enough familiar data-points to draw on to treat it. Also, biorxiv and twitter have totally changed the accessibility of scientific discourse and research. 15/15

Coronaviruses mutate 1-2 orders of magnitude more slowly than most other RNA viruses, since their replication enzyme has unique error correction capability. (That's not v practically relevant, but it *is* something I think about with people like EFD freaking about ~mutations~)

This group is amazing! Please consider getting involved as a mentor or practice interviewer. You can search these databases by multiple keywords, and the hits are sorted by overall match goodness! It's the same method I use on

Hi, yes, since it's the I thought I'd share a list of books you can read that give an accurate view of Indigenous peoples because, well, we wrote them. Racist mascots aren't truth tellers. They stir up hate & discrimination. Read some books instead:

Some scientists posted a that was flashy ("uncanny", "astonishing"), apparently not very careful, and wrong. Within hours, half a dozen experts commented that it was wrong and showed why it was wrong. This IS how it's supposed to work.
