My guess is, the cartoonist chafed at the idea of spending the rest of his life drawing his dead uncle's strip, and found a way to rebel.

He doesn't want to wreck his uncle's legacy, but he wants to put his own stamp on the strip. I think, anyway.
I get it. It's probably a lot of pressure to continue something you didn't create.
I'd imagine I was stuck doing something I wasnt really a part of.
