    I'm struck by how the 14th Street Busway illustrates the idea that when cars are removed from a space the idea of "rules" become less important. Consider all the people crossing midblock without a problem or comfortably cycling on a street that lacks bike lanes.

    Just love that the 14th Street Busway is not only great for transit but peoole using all sorts of methods to get around!

    b) acting as if you hand over your want for somebody else to fulfill it, but actually keeping it and acting on it yourself. These violate "conservation of utility functions", and alter the overall composition a bit toward your wants. I guess this is what "exploitation" means?

    ("Karl Marx wants a sandwich" can be …traded, thus the local sandwichier ends up with all the "X wants a sandwich" desires and makes sandwiches for every X.) There are at least to forms of cheating: a) acting as if you take over somebody's want but don't (standard P-A problem);

    On a large scale, utility functions are conserved, it's just a different agent executing the pieces of them. It *is* from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, because reciprocally, we benevolently do things on their behalf.

    The second view is how people interact with family members and close friends (treating them transactionally, as-means-not-as-ends, is a good way to damage the relationship), but here it's expected that strangers will negotiate in the same way.

    If Bob is dazed and signs a (to him) suboptimal contract with Alice, then on an extreme form of the first view, he is stupid, but there is nothing otherwise wrong. On the second view, his counterparty has a sort of low-grade fiduciary duty to him and she reneged on it.
