Yes! Illustrators do most of the heavy lifting in picture books. My library is pleased to celebrate the art of illustrators with this annual award.

  3. This is your occasional, authorly reminder that your public library may offer an online form allowing patrons to recommend new books to be added to the collection. I just asked my public library to purchase this one, which looks lovely.

  4. This is one of the very best books I read last year, for readers of any age. I sure miss Karen Blumenthal.

  5. I wish that state reading list committees (some, not all) were better about this, too. Honoring only the author of a picture book may not be *intentionally* insulting to the illustrator, but I believe it's an insult all the same.

How do we talk about trauma and recovery with children? I have some picture book suggestions. Silence cannot erase tragedy. But by sharing stories, we can offer comfort, hope, and the strength to heal.

A small but extremely meaningful component of Biden’s immigration plan: changing the word “alien” to “noncitizen” in our immigration laws. I remember pushing for this years ago. Words matter.

“I don’t expect them to accept Biden’s open hand. It hardly advances the interest of many Republicans to help make Biden popular and successful. Their fastest route to fame and power will be to denounce him as a socialist terror.”

My GOP congressman managed to wish success to the new administration for a whole seven hours before sending this scaremongering email about socialism. Please do better.

In addition to shortening the lame-duck period between presidencies, how about a moratorium on presidential pardons from, say, one month before Election Day until after Inauguration Day? Voters should be able to consider who the sitting president is willing to grant those to.

Tomorrow, I'll be recording a school visit from home, taking frequent breaks for celebration, and still believing we need books like that more than ever. 3/3

"The only reference I heard was after my John Roy Lynch presentation to fifth/sixth when [the librarian] said something to the effect of, 'On a day like today, with what’s been going on in our country, we need books like this more than ever.'" 2/3

My notes from 1/20/2017, a day I spent visiting a school in the Dallas area: "Inauguration day. Not a word was said to students during the school announcements over the PA system in the morning." 1/3

Why yes, yes it does! Read alouds, eBooks, Audiobooks, and more! Teacher-read, Parent-read, student-read, what else?! I once had a student read aloud to her pet. It all counts! Happy, happy reading! Thanks for sharing!
