I have almost a million subscribers and over 750 videos and they rarely show up as suggested. It comes down to upload frequency, retention, keywords & relevance. It’s frustrsting, I know.

retention is not that important. it is multifactorial, as you said and you can be blocked from ever being suggested if video is outside of what the algorithm believes the main topic of your channel is or outside of the interest of your channel's main demographic

Also, rentention of percentage of video watched are very important. All my videos that perform well and get the most views have much higher retention (percentage of time watched relative to video length) however the algorithm is constantly changing and I’m not keeping up with it

i know for some videos it works that way, but not all. some appears to be hotspot-based. so, if your video has multiple hotspots of increased attention, even if retention low time-wise, it also ranks high. i have a vid with 6 min/8 min retention that was never suggested.

What was the total length of the video and were the key words heavily searched and did your title contain those keyword and phrases? You’re right hot topics get more traction, it’s why people pander to them

no, not hot topics, hot spots, as in blips of increased viewer retention or repeats within the watchtime graph

Oh, in that case yeah it’s going to make a big difference. It all comes down to a weight and if some things rank high it makes up for others ranking low. The total score is boosted. Just like videos with high like/view ratios get a huge bump because of engagement.
