My next door neighbors years ago was telling me about cobra when he lost his job. How is an unemployed person who could barely pay the premiums when working afford this? It boggles. What would be in surprise bill that insurance wouldn't cover? I've been incredibly lucky.

I have health insurance. Went to the doctor for ear pain. Paid my copay, but still got a bill later. Upon further investigation I learned I only get 5 doctor visits at my copay rate, and mental health visits count toward that total.

How about the surprise of Cobra after being let go from a position of 20 years due to Covid? Almost $1700 a month! Must have for family member who is diabetic and in case of hospital visits due to Covid and other emergencies. :(
