It has been a year of protests against racism & the police state. While the police target protestors, they also target journalists covering the movements. From detentions to arrests & even killings, journalists all over the world are putting a lot at risk for the sake of truth.

We’ve seen reporters getting arrested, jailed, & generally frustrated, in an attempt to muzzle press freedom. Here in Kenya, cases of missing journalists, writers and anyone whose line of work touches on investigative and truth telling journalism are not rare.

Widespread and deliberate misinformation muddies the water even more. We have all found ourselves in situations where we are praying for a reporter who exposed corruption, or a whistleblower who revealed top ranking misconduct of unimaginable proportions.

Earlier this year, Kenyan journalist Collins Juma Osemo, aka, Yassin Juma, was arrested in Ethiopia while on assignment. He faced multiple charges, broke a rib & contracted Covid-19 in a detention center in Addis Ababa, an experience he says highlights press freedom suppression:
