cis writers, if a publication asks you to write about trans issues, a good thing to do is say “thanks, but I’m afraid I have to decline because I think this story would best be told by a trans writer. I hope to work with you some other time” and if you can, rec somebody else.

I’m not certain this is right. We should all be talking about it. If we’re only letting trans writers talk about it then not only are we limiting ourselves to the 1.4 million Americans who are trans and then further limiting that to the small percentage of those who are writers.

You are correct. The issues every group faces should be recognized and commented upon by everyone. The idea that others outside the group inherently lack sufficient understanding to empathize with another’s plight is what creates echo chambers and division.

Thank you. I think this sort of exclusionary behavior is more hurtful than it is helpful

That's literally what you're saying. Why even try to obfuscate at this point? Are ya stupid?

"publications should prioritize hiring trans voices to discuss trans issues" is not the same as "only trans people are allowed to talk about trans issues." Hope that clears things up.

No it doesn't. First of all, the "advice" you're passive-aggressively handing out here is for authors, not publishers. Secondly, if people adhere to this godawful lunacy then yes the result would be to render trans people the exclusive subject of trans authors. Why pretend?

Just own your godawful cultural apartheid stance instead of trying to downplay the implications of what you're advocating. No one with a functioning brain is buying it anyway.

sure in imagination-land where people actually take this advice to heart. Most people won't. This is about getting trans voices *at the table at all*. But you believe what you want. Bye!

Again, why pretend otherwise if YOU KNOW that this is the implication of what you're advocating? Just be honest.
