In fact, the name has been changed to “delusional symptoms in partner of individual with delusional disorder” with the new edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Many have different complaints about the DSM-5, but to me this seems a misnomer.

While delusions, particularly delusions of persecution, are the most commonly shared—and delusions alone are insufficient to qualify as “psychosis”—I have seen cases of hallucinations, and mood symptoms have also been documented.

If you think of the underlying principle, it makes sense: the sheer emotional drive that generated the symptoms in the person with the illness is what gets transmitted, and whatever symptoms the primary person has gets reproduced.

The reason I suspect shared psychosis with Donald Trump’s followers—by the way, shared psychosis was a diagnosis under DSM-4 but is now more an observation—is because the intensity of emotion seems to be what is spreading.

He very much expresses the feeling of being a victim who is unfairly targeted, and the more delusional he is (that is, truly and deeply believes this), the more effective he will be not only at convincing but at transmitting the feeling to others who support him.

Through the sympathy and bond that they already share, the strength of the emotion causes his supporters to believe his words over facts and evidence, and to “double down” by supporting him more, the more there is opposition to him.

This is why having an “ironclad” case was irrelevant, why waiting to impeach was dangerous, and why a Senate trial is likely to be a victory for him, no matter what. This is why we should distinguish pathological emotional dependence and manipulation from true, popular support.

Once we identify it as pathology, we know that “going high instead of low” or exemplifying stricter lawfulness or ethics (such as with Al Franken) will not work. Limit setting works: calling out what is for what it is (yes, including mental compromise!).

Pointing out the truth works—it is a powerful form of limit setting. Sociopathic individuals wish for you to believe they are strong, but they are not. They may try as far as to destroy everything to prove they are strong, but the truth remains that they could never build.

I recall this disorder being referred to as "folie à deux" ("madness for two"). However it's clear that in this case far more than two are involved.
-
Yes—that is the earlier name! (and perhaps a better one). Folie à deux being the most common, there is folie à trois, quatre, plusieurs, and even millions !
