My father was granted release on parole today, after more than 40 years in prison!

Because forty years are more than enough. The US is an outlier among Western democracies with this kind of extreme sentences. With very few exceptions noone should be in prison that long.

Why not? Seems like clemency and release of nonviolent hostages will be easier when "violent" ones obtain release.

He was the getaway driver. He didn’t actually kill anyone. But I definitely see your point.

I don't see your point? One aspect of the justice system being arbitrary and harsh doesn't justify being arbitrary and harsh in another aspect of the justice system. 40 years is a very long time, the idea that him getting parole is some great injustice is really dumb.

I agree it seems unfair. But perhaps the better question would be: Why are sentences for non-violent crimes so outrageously high especially when applied to people from non-white and/or lower socio-economic backgrounds who often have very limited legal representation?
