What did happen when the kids where at home? They went out and played - thus meeting and causing transmission?

I thought so too. Until my math teacher died in Bulgaria, where schools remained open. Then others died. In 8 weeks, hundreds of teachers died. So they closed the schools

To assess whether this was BECAUSE of schools you need to ask 'did they die at a much greater rate than other professionals?' The answer seems to be 'no' indicating schools were no related to increased risk.

I am pretty sure in Poland schools were major vector in spread and also their closure resulted in spread reduction. Possibly not children at all, but teachers being the issue. Plus, size of the schools and sanitary measures (not) taken here.
