Preprint reporting further evidence for the presence of #SARSCoV2 neutralising antibodies elicited by prior exposure to ‘common cold’ coronaviruses. Up to ~60% of healthy children/teenagers showed some cross-reactivity relative to ~6% of adults. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.05.14.095414v2 …pic.twitter.com/Ern9ubZCsY

What could explain this difference between children and adults?

So what this is suggesting is that exposure to other cold corona viruses could offer enough immunity vs COVID-19 in some cases? Would this explain the asymptomatic positives or would such people not test positive at all?

Moderate cross-reactive neutralising antibodies like reported here should help alleviate symptoms. It might even protect from infection in some cases. Time will tell ...

Is there a vaccine for the common cold coronaviruses? Could it be a stop gap until we have vaccine for covid-19?

No there is not. No market worthy of expense of development. ‘Colds’ are caused by more than just the 4 CVs, a vaccine for them wouldn’t be particularly attractive to most people ( until now, perhaps )

Could this hypothetically mean that exposing healthy people to a mild coronavirus, prevents severity of disease for a bigger group of people?

Is it possible that increased exposure to coronaviruses of main child-carers could explain some of the difference in susceptibility seen between men and women?

Interesting hypothesis ... It might contribute to lesser symptoms in women on average.

Yet I always thought that the older you are, the more cold viruses you’ve been exposed to and are therefore more immune?
