I'm sorry. Politics is just too toxic for me right now. I'm going to go write and listen to Tchaikovsky ... any Tchaikovsky ... *all* Tchaikovsky ... and restore my soul.

The second movement is Tchaikovsky at his best in dance-like delight, never failing to enchant (about 13 minutes in, if you haven't the patience), and more than worth your time.

Tchaikovsky's 1st String Quartet is justly famous (the Andante cantabile moving Tolstoy to tears), but his Second is even more Tchaikovsky, full of flourish and unending melody...

I spent decades publishing and publicizing the books of others ... and now, with one of my own, I'm at a loss. Tooting others' horns is a whole lot easier than tooting your own, I'm discovering...

...In both love scenes—what beauty, what languor, what passion! All this is incomparable. Then the magnificently wild and savage Caliban, the ethereal and playful Ariel—these are all most excellent. And the orchestration—especially in these scenes—is astounding!"

The critic Vladimir Stasov wrote of its preview: "In an otherwise empty hall we sat together in a row with Rimsky-Korsakov, enraptured. Your Tempest is such a delight! How magnificent!... Caliban, Ariel, the love scene—all these belong among the loftiest of musical creations...

Tchaikovsky loved Shakespeare, and his "The Tempest" was one of the most often performed works during his lifetime. It begins with the sea, and concludes with the sea. The Flanders Symphony takes you on that journey...

I love the way music leads on to music. Mozart inspired Tchaikovsky and in turn Tchaikovsky inspired Stravinsky. Here, Timothy Judd examines the influence of Tchaikovsky on Stravinsky and his music.

Here's a rarity...in fact today was the first time I have ever heard it! Tchaikovsky's "Chorus for the Jubilee of Osip Petrov." This short salutary work was written to commemorate the actor's 50th year on stage...a charming tribute.

6 1/2 powerful minutes of the *incomparable* Irina Arkhipova, perhaps the greatest mezzo of the 20th century, as Joan of Arc singing farewell to her homeland in "Adieu fôrets" from Tchaikovsky's glorious "The Maid of Orleans." Wait for it. Breathtaking.
