Boston University has decided that all PhD students (both service and non service) have to take a leave of absence if they won’t be able to come back to campus by September 1st so that BU won’t have to pay stipends. +

Embassies are closed. We cannot take appointments even as J-1 scholars who are funded by the department of state. If I’ll take a leave of absence, I will lose my Fulbright status-for which I worked so hard. +

More- because they announced that they will apply “Learn from Anywhere”- I signed a lease. Now, if I can’t take a visa appointment- I won’t have a job, I will lose my Fulbright status, and I have to make a living in Turkey where my research abilities are worthless.

So this means, if you are an American citizen and you were able to stay in the US and be with your family, you are worth to be paid. If not- if you chose to be at your home with your family, you have to pay the consequences of a global pandemic.

I actually don’t think @BU_Tweets is a terrible place. My experience with BU has been great overall until today, with this new policy.

So this is an atrocious policy on the part of BU, with huge ramifications for international students. Those universities with huge endowments must do better.
