Despite a noble attempt by many years of quantitative education, I still can't *really* read math.

I have about the same fluency as for reading music: I grok certain chunked concepts, like major chords, the rest requires mental translation

I glaze over at equations in text unless I force myself to decode them. Do mathematically fluent people not have this experience?

reading math is totally different for me from reading words. Math notation is purposefully terse, conceptually dense

while reading one equation you must pause, think critically, work things out, become surprised at realizations, etc
