I am much worse than average at remembering arbitrary words and names. I stubbornly refuse to retain mnemonics or practice mental tricks

My retention goes way up if the names belong to the right context. I don't know what exactly "right" is, though
It arises from understanding something systemic about the context, and feeling that this is exciting, and deriving the names from the whole

Thus a weakness of mine is that I fail to retain info locally if I can't yet see how it's part of a larger system
