The film came out in 97, but the game didn’t come out until 2001. It was delayed and never cancelled, despite being a full tie-in. With the PS2 and Xbox on the horizon, it was understandably quickly forgotten on release.pic.twitter.com/gWdLZTAWFO

Which is unfortunate because it’s a hell of a game. It was the first FPS to use modern twin-stick controls as a default, beating Halo to market by several months. The controls are floaty but accurate enough for the games enemies.
Which are absolutely savage. Long before DOOM 3, Alien: Resurrection was making strides in making an FPS tense as hell to play. Despite being a shooter, this game is focused on pacing and atmosphere. The game opens with an exploring for about 20 minutes. Nothing elsepic.twitter.com/4q5Cb0Bvmf
Which brings me to the graphics. Oh those graphics. This game looks old, but FEELS modern. Water drips from ceiling pipes, hallways and lights flicker with sound effects, steam spouts from vents and the constant hum of space machinery is as soothing as it is foreboding.pic.twitter.com/xbavhYSgxc
Just look at these lighting effects. On that grimy PS1 hardware. Tell me you aren’t feeling it.pic.twitter.com/xT4nNhsqzr
The ambiance in this game is out of control.pic.twitter.com/nMyM75TDP6
It is also chock full of environmental storytelling. Bodies aren’t simply placed in rooms, they are meticulously posed with corresponding blood on the walls and other affected pieces of the environments.pic.twitter.com/KAJvfQD4iA
It pays attention to one of the most important elements of a good horror game, especially a first person one: memorable imagery. The entire game is full of memorable scenes throughout the environments, placed just to be observed.pic.twitter.com/p1TdTSwEJR
Another perfect example is this laser wall and the bisected worker near it. Simple storytelling yeah, but immediately effective for the player.pic.twitter.com/BkyHTQHWAf
It’s also ridiculously hard. Any encounter with an Alien can turn sideways fast and leave you dead, and save points are few and far between. But like Alien Isolation this game rewards patience, and it never feels too unfair.pic.twitter.com/GXEIyuCgfi
Alien Resurrection should be experienced by anyone interested in horror, shooters, or just overlooked gems. It has issues, but it was legitimately innovative and interesting and never got its due. With low poly seeing a comeback, more people should take a look at it.pic.twitter.com/ANTNuZINQb
So hey this thread blew up a little bit. While you’re here, check out some of the writing I do for @RelyonHorror, like where I talk about the environmental aesthetic of F.E.A.Rhttps://www.relyonhorror.com/articles/lest-we-forget-the-wonderfully-boring-environments-of-f-e-a-r/ …
Or the great encounter and level design in Condemned: Criminal Origins. I also write reviews and put out monthly articles on game and narrative design in horror games. Throw a couple bucks their way on Patreonhttps://www.relyonhorror.com/articles/lest-forget-condemneds-best-level/ …
I’m also a narrative designer in between projects. I launched my first Twine game on @itchio a few months ago and it’s been fairly well received. It’s free so check it out. I also did quest design for @GranSkreaOnline, which launched on Steam recently.https://jordan-leendertsen.itch.io/men-dont-play-with-dolls …
And if any of this sounds good, you can look at my Patreon. I’m trying to transition to game development and writing full-time, so every little bit helps!https://www.patreon.com/jordanleendertsen …
it is a classic late 90s FPS: a lot of attention to details that matter, also the artists really took advantage of the very gritty psx rendering to make it look... Gritty :D I am not a fan at all of consoles FPS games BUT there are som exception here and there, this is one
It’s a shame it was a PS1 exclusive. If it has released on PC, it probably would have a much bigger following.
Probably, although if you compare it to late 90s or early 2000 pc fps it would be probably bashed because of how ancient the game was overall
do you know if this game is available on PC at all?
The only way on PC would be with a PS1 emulator.
Daaaaaammmm
