New article! "XDR: X-Dazedly Ray" https://www.badgamehalloffame.com/blog/xdr-x-dazedly-ray/ … When one-time developer UNIPACC attempted to enter the Mega Drive's market for scrolling shooters, their disaster would echo across the galaxy. The story of Ray Starbreaker and his ‘Operation X’ can finally be told!pic.twitter.com/uAE0zQuErC

Nice work on this one, congrats on stumbling into some deep Japanese RPG development lore :V That story of a UK magazine completely making up their own plot for the game reminds me of this nonsense C&VG made up for The Ninja Warriorshttps://twitter.com/SarahSSowertty/status/1159898652946632705 …

As a ~follow up~ to the home computer box blurb for The Ninja Warriors, here's a review of the Mega-CD port from C&VG Issue 141 (August 1993) that completely makes up its own plot for the game. This port ~has an intro in English~! Two of them!! (Source: https://segaretro.org/index.php?title=File:CVG_UK_141.pdf&page=90 …) pic.twitter.com/bdoV5fJeCg

Meh. Disaster is a bit strong. It's an extremely bland and basic game but at least it's functional. I'd say Xenon 2: Megablast is a lot worse because it's absurdly choppy and has even blander enemies.

I'm gonna go ahead and argue that any game which kills its developer / publisher immediately after its release is a "disaster." I'd agree that 'Xenon 2' is the worse game to actually have to play (I do mention it in the article), but it doesn't approach the damage XDR did.

While I understand that Japan didn’t get certain games, it always amuses me to see Double Dragon II ranked so low. It’s pretty bad on non-overclocked hardware, but it’s not even the worst DD game on the platform!

I feel kinda bad for these devs. They clearly tried and had some ambition in that interview, but they just seemingly fell short in every area. Doesn't seem very deserving of "worst of the worst" derision at all!

The interview was odd because they were saying "this is a game everyone can play, even those new to the genre" and I read it like "we're making babby's first shmup" so the short length and easy gameplay made total sense to me! But I guess that's not what Genesis gamers wanted :P

Hey, just a heads up: The article actually says "16ビットマシン” (16-bit machine) referring to the Mega Drive. They're saying that the PC Engine is also really good, but the Mega Drive is 16-bit and ROMs are cheaper. Just wanted to point out they weren't disparaging the PC Eng.

Duly noted and corrected! I have to rely on OCR for transcribing larger blocks of Japanese text, and I do try to double-check to make sure no characters go missing / get mistranslated in the process. But clearly, I missed the "16" there, and came away with a wrong impression.
