This really only works in parliamentary systems. A big left-wing party in the US would just split the vote and give the elections (at least the presidential, and contested senate and house seats) to republicans

Did you listen to the episode? It’s a straightforward strategy; Dems meet the some demands of left or they wont vote for them. To a leftist, the Republicans and Democrats are elitists that have nearly identical economic/military policies.
