2/ Of all the “holy crap” moments I had reading this paper, researching the various pieces, and writing about it, the part that kept coming back to haunt me was the amount of dust it made. It’s staggering. Overwhelming.

3/ This was an asteroid 150 km across. There aren’t many asteroids bigger than that! It was very likely the biggest asteroid to be destroyed by collision in the last 500 million years.

4/ The collision would’ve created hundreds of thousands of cubic km of dust. An impossible thing to picture. And some of that dust fell to the inner solar system and started sliding down into Earth’s atmosphere.

4/ It increased the amount of dust hitting Earth by 100 - 1000 times. You go outside at night now, you might see 5 meteors/hour. When that dust got here, that number went up to seeing one every *second*. Everywhere on Earth. For tens of thousands of years.

6/ No wonder it sparked an ice age. The good news is that massive collisions like that are extraordinarily rare. That was the last one in half a billion years. It’s not big on my “worry about this” list. But it looms large in my “holy geez the things that happen in space” list.

7/7 And this is a stark reminder that we exist (and other things no longer do) because of weird random twists and turns of fate that can happen right in front of our noses or hundreds of millions of kilometers away. That’s it. That’s my point. https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/466-million-years-ago-a-huge-asteroid-impact-helped-life-on-earth-be-fruitful-and-multiply … /fin

Awesome article about an interesting geologic piece. I have one (minor) quibble though: L chondrites never were molten, which is why the chondrules are still visible, giving them the name chondrite
they are stony, but they do have a significant amount of metal (~ 4 wt%) -
Oh dang. Of course you’re right. I know where I got turned around (too long to describe here) but I fixed it. Thanks!
