After the DS Lite, the only DS with the perfect hinge/shell design. That thing closed itself off real good.

The problem there is that after Nintendo released the "New" brand, "Lite" might have sounded like a downgrade to the average consumer.

So I think such branding existing meant they didn't really have a choice. It's been shit branding from the get-go but it's what they've got.
